Shipping Size Guide
Used lab equipment is bulky. International carriers charge by volumetric weight, not actual weight — so a fairly light instrument in a large protective carton is billed as a heavy shipment.
Below are real shipments we have packed and sent. Find the one closest in size to the item you are interested in, then ask your carrier or freight forwarder for a quote using the volumetric weight shown. Please include that cost in the amount you offer.
Every dimension below is the outside measurement of the finished shipment, including the pallet where one is used — not the size of the instrument itself.
A rough idea of cost
Use the charged weight from the examples above — not the instrument's own weight.
Costs move from there depending on the destination, with the United States as 100%.
The letter in brackets next to your country on the offer form — for example [M] — is the zone. Find it below.
- Door-to-door economy freight from Japan. Not included: customs clearance, import duties and taxes, insurance.
- Costs move with fuel surcharges and exchange rates. Fuel changes weekly.
- Above about 70 kg a shipment travels as freight. Below that it travels as a package and the rate per kg is higher.
- Very large items may ship by sea instead, which works differently.
- Your actual cost depends on the packed size of your shipment.
Every shipment is packed to order
Nothing is dropped into a standard box. We measure each instrument and build a cardboard outer case to fit it. Larger items are first mounted on a wooden pallet cut to size for that shipment, using heat-treated timber that meets the ISPM-15 export standard, so the shipment clears customs without being held or repacked.
That is why the dimensions above are larger than the instrument itself — and volume is what carriers charge for. It is also why we have never had an item damaged in transit.
